Rajasthani Marwari in India

Overview

Marwari is a language spoken by millions of people in the present Indian state of Rajasthan. The Marwari people are of different ethnic and caste backgrounds, but they all speak the Marwari language.

Over the centuries, a small number of missionaries have come to the Marwari speaking peoples, but there are few churches and only a handful of believers. While several agencies are working among the Marwari now, we need to pray for a unified strategy and collaboration in this difficult area.

The Marwari peoples who still live in the Marwar area of their state are very diverse: they are merchants, farmers, homemakers, well educated, illiterate, champion horse breeders, soldiers, musicians, and television producers, and stonemasons.

When you visit the Marwar (Marwad) area, you are struck by the colorful garments, offsetting the barren terrain. "From the simple village folk or tribal (peoples) to the (royal) Rajas and Ranis, the preferred colours are bright red, dazzling yellow, lively green or brilliant orange, highlighted by a lavish use of sparkling gold and silver (jewelry)."

Most Marwari are followers of Hinduism with many dramatic festivals throughout the year. Of the millions of gods revered by the Marwari, none came to set them free from their sins, satan, and death. They are satisfied with their religion since almost no one has explained the gift that Jesus holds out to the Marwari.

Prayer

Ask God to...

  • Send the Holy Spirit to soften the hearts of the Marwari towards Christians so that they will be receptive to the Gospel.
  • Call humble, culturally sensitive Indian and other Christians to share the Gospel with the Marwari.
  • Strengthen, protect, and raise up leaders among the small number of known Marwari Christians.
  • Guide the linguists who are preparing a new translation of the Bible in the Marwari language.
