Manga Kanuri in Nigeria

Overview

"A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save."  Psalm 33:17

"His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love." Psalm 147:10-11

Horses are some of God's most beautiful, powerful, and useful creatures. God mentions the splendor of horses in His speech to Job as a testimony to His own creative and powerful majesty (39:19). Horses are a tremendous benefit to farmers and a matchless source for transportation in societies where technology is scarce. It is no wonder, then, that horses are so highly valued in Manga Kanuri culture. They are the ultimate symbol of prestige.

This cultural value, however, is very revealing in light of passages like Psalm 33:17 and 147:10-11. Herein we discover that the very thing exalted in Manga Kanuri culture is decried as vanity by God. In this way, the Manga Kanuri are a picture of all humanity. Every culture has its "horses," things upon which we rely instead of God. May they and we learn that mere "horses" cannot compete with the living God and His unfailing love.

AFM-USA and AFM-Nigeria recently sponsored a strategy coordinator training conference in Nigeria.  The result of this time was the appointment of twelve Nigerian pastors for work among unreached peoples in Africa.  Rev. Yohanna A. Audu is the missionary preparing for work among the Manga Kanuri of Nigeria.

The vision of AFM-Nigeria and AFM-USA is that American congregations would partner with the work of the Nigerian missionaries by “adopting” a missionary and his target people group! Partnering American congregations would be invited to pray regularly for their people group and their missionary, get to know their people group through research, build a relationship with the Nigerian missionary, and support him with $2000 a year. Visit the "Blessing of the Twelve" page in the People Group Info section of this website to see how you can be involved in reaching the Manga Kanuri.
